Magnesium can be applied regularly to replace losses that occur as a result of intensive farming practises or we can simply wait until magnesium related animal health problems manifest themselves before applying. Waiting until problems occur can be a costly option. Significant production and income will have been lost before the first clinical signs of ?grass staggers?.
By soil and herbage testing on a regular basis it is possible to monitor the magnesium status of a property and the decision on when and how much magnesium to apply becomes clearer. However this approach is not without some difficulties as induced magnesium deficiencies may occur even when soil magnesium levels, both plant available and reserve levels are adequate.
The major reason for herbage levels to fall below 0.20% (a safe level above which hypomagnesaemia will seldom occur) when soil levels are adequate is the application of other cations (Ca, K, Na) or nitrogen. The application of lime is likely to lift available calcium levels at the expense of magnesium. The application of potassium in spring and autumn fertiliser mixes nearly always has an immediate and negative effect on herbage magnesium levels which is why it is now common practise for spring fertiliser applications containing potassium to be withheld until after calving and lambing.
Sunshine also has a major effect on herbage magnesium levels. Bright sunny days can lift levels toward the desired 0.25%. Herbage from the same area on a cloudy day may be 0.20% or less.
Ensuring sufficient magnesium in herbage throughout the season for metabolic related disorders to seldom occur is possible. It is not necessary to rely heavily on drenching or dusting for long periods. Dolomite based DoloZest will help ensure adequate levels of magnesium throughout the season. DoloZest also contains a high quality Bio-Gro certified compost, added microbes, boron and trace elements to speed the natural organic cycle, aid in the formation of sugars and provide a wholesome nourishing diet for high performing stock.
Farms that benefit most from the annual application of DoloZest are high performing dairy properties where Magnesium deficiencies are common place. Autumn is the ideal time for the application of DoloZest to ensure optimum animal health and performance for the coming season.
